Situated in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore needs no introduction. You might be tempted to save the parking fee and view the memorial from the highway, it's worth an in person visit to the memorial and visitor center.

WHAT TO SEE

The carvings of four great US Presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are the main attractions to this memorial. There are a number of interesting exhibits, a self guided walk as well as ranger programs.

WHERE TO STAY

There are no overnight accommodations at Mount Rushmore, but there are plenty of hotels and campgrounds in the vicinity.

WHERE TO EAT

Carver's Cafe, operated by Xanterra Travel, is the only restaurant located at Mount Rushmore. It serves a variety of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

BEST HIKES FOR KIDS

In addition to walking the pathways in the memorial, there is also the Blackberry Trail, located right outside the memorial parking across HWY 244. The path is considered moderately strenuous because gravel and small water crossings.

Mount Rushmore doesn't take long to see. There are some interesting exhibits in the visitor center and sculptor's studio. Like other parks, there is a junior ranger program, There is also a nighttime lights program. Another fun activity is to get ice cream at the Carver's Cafe and enjoy a sweet treat while gazing at the memorial
