A visit to Charleston wouldn't be complete without a visit to Fort Sumter National Historic Park. Visitors reach the fort by ferry. Tickets can be purchased at the visitor center or online ahead of time.
WHAT TO SEE
Once you arrive at the fort, you can explore the grounds. There is also an indoor exhibit about the fort and the Civil War. Try and plan your trip around a ranger talk.

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, S.C., where there are a number of great hotels and bed and breakfasts.
WHERE TO EAT
While there is a small gift shop at Fort Sumter, there is no food sold at the park. BUT Charleston is one of the best food cities in the country. So plan your visit around a visit to one of the great restaurants in the area.
BEST HIKES FOR FAMILIES
While there aren't any trails in at the fort, it's a fun place for kids to walk around and explore all the nooks and crannies, just make sure family members follow the rules and don't climb on any cannons.
BEST TIPS FOR KIDS
There's a junior ranger program at this park like the others. To get to the park, visitors take a ferry. What's not to love about a boat ride to a fort?
At the end of the day, stay for the flag ceremony. The ranger talk and ceremony are fascinating and a great way to appreciate the history and significance of the fort.
